This was the maiden continental summit convened by the Ministers of Education of Nigeria and South Africa to chart a way forward for the teaching profession in Africa. The summit resolved to establish a continental intergovernmental body to coordinate efforts in that regard. That body became the Africa Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA)
