AFTRA SENDS-FORTH AFRICA UNION YOUTH CORPS VOLUNTEER
June 28, 2019: AFTRA jointly with the Federal Ministry of Education and Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, held a memorable send-forth ceremony in honour of Ms. Fatouma Mohamed Ali, who meritoriously completed her tenure as the Office Manager of the AFTRA International Office, Abuja. Ms. Ali is from Djibouti, East Africa and was deployed to AFTRA by the African Union as a Youth Volunteer Corps. The African Union has posted another Youth Volunteer, Ms. Martine Prudence Lora M. Abega to AFTRA.
AFTRA EXCECUTIVE DIRECTOR ACADEMICS SPEAKS AT TEACHERS’ 1stCONFERENCE, KENYA
June 21-22, 2019: AFTRA Executive Director Academics, Professor Steve Nwokeocha was Keynote Speaker at 1st National Conference of Teachers organized by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Kenya. The TSC is the employer and regulator of teachers in the public education sector of Kenya. The AFTRA Executive Director spoke on the “Principles and Practices of Effective Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century”. The conference was epoch-making and attracted teachers, school administrators, top academics, and government functionaries from across Kenya and foreign countries. It was hosted by the TSC Chairman, Dr Lydia Nzomo OGW, CBS and TSC Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Dr Nancy Macharia, CBS.
LESOTHO PRIME MINISTER DECLARES OPEN
AFTRA 10TH ANNIVERSARY, ROUNDTABLE & CONFERENCE
May 14-18, 2019: Dr. Motsoahae Thomas Thabane, The Right Honourable, Prime Minister of Lesotho declared open the 10 AFTRA Anniversary, co-located with the 10th AFTRA Roundtable and 8th Conference. His Excellency, Paul Biya, President of Cameroon was represented by Professor Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, Minister of Basic Education, Cameroon. Among other Ministers of Education that represented their respective countries were Mrs. Angelina Matsie Motshekga, Minister of Basic Education, South Africa; and Hon. David Mabumba, Minister of General Education, Zambia. Her Excellency, Professor Sarah Anyang Agbor, Commissioner of Human Resources, Science and Technology, African Union; Permanent Secretaries of Ministries of Education, Chief Executive Officers of national regulatory agencies, and delegates and participants from countries across Africa participated. High-level officials of the following international organisations participated – African Union; UNESCO-International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa; Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education; Southern Africa Development Community (SADC); Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS); Education International Africa Region; and Africa Deans of Education Forum. Professor H.B. Patel, Dean of Education, Central University, Gujarat, India was the intercontinental keynote speaker at the conference. The week-long tripartite events were hosted by Professor Prof Ntoi Rapapa, Minister of Education and Training, Lesotho, supported by Mabutho Cele, President of AFTRA and other AFTRA Management and Executive Board officials.
During the event, conferred its prestigious Fellowships on distinguished personalities nominated by their respective countries or international organisations, as the case may be. Among the new Fellows were: Mrs. Angelina Matsie Motshekga (South Africa); Dr Ebby Mubanga (Zambia); Dr Evelyn Oduro (Ghana) Michael Olukoya-Alogba (Nigeria); Elijah Ogoti Ongarora (Kenya); Dr. Mamocheta C. Makara (Lesotho); Dr Beatrice Khamati Njenga (Continental); Prof Is-haq O. OLOYEDE (Continental) and David Wahome Kibui (Continental).
The climax of the awards was the decoration of the Prime Minister of Lesotho and President of Cameroon (represented) with the AFTRA PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF HONOUR. That marked the first time in AFTRA’s ten-year existence that it gave out this most eminent honour reserved for Presidents and Heads of State in Africa with Distinction in their promotion of the Teaching Profession in their countries and internationally.
GHANA DECLARED AS HOST OF AFTRA ROUNDTABLE & CONFERENCE, 2020
The Republic of Ghana has won the rights to host the 11th Annual AFTRA Roundtable and 9th Conference scheduled to hold in Accra, Ghana, May, 2020. The Announcements on this will be made public in the course of the year.
AFTRA EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETS IN NIGERIA & GHANA BACK TO BACK
The Executive Board of AFTRA will meet in Abuja, Nigeria and Accra, Ghana in November, 2019. The meeting is to operationalize the decisions taken at the last AFTRA Anniversary, Conference and Roundtable in Lesotho, and to plan ahead for the hosting of the 2020 events by Ghana. The Executive Board of AFTRA consists of the AFTRA Management and two-member organisations from each of the five geo-political zones of Africa. Therefore, the meeting promises to be a remarkable event during which the Board will also meet with the Ministers of Education of Nigeria and Ghana.
