PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICES OF EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHERS IN AWUTU SENYA EAST MUNICIPALITY, GHANA
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the pedagogical practices of early childhood teachers in the Awutu Senya East Municipality Ghana. Explanatory sequential mixed method design was adopted for the study. Samples of 125 early childhood teachers at the study area were made using census and simple random sampling techniques for the purposes of the study. Questionnaires were administered after which ten early childhood teachers were selected for interview and observation. Data was analysed using mean, standard deviation, frequencies and percentages and narratives. Results emanating from the study point to the following: Early childhood teachers used varied teaching and learning activities in their pedagogical practices in the study area, instructional materials were available at the early childhood education centres, however, those available instructional materials were inadequate due to the large number of learners per class. The study recommended that due to emerging new theories about how children learn, there is the need for occasional or systematic in service training to keep abreast early childhood teachers with the new strategies of teaching early childhood learners.
